Forest
Stewardship Council Certification
| The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit
organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world's
forests. Their
certification requires sustainable forest management and is the only system
that tracks forest products from the forest to the consumer using third-party
verification. In 2002 Pioneer Forest
invited a team from Smartwood to inspect the entire forest for certification under the FSC-certification program. In February of 2003 we were awarded Smartwood/FSC
Certification (Certificate
from Smartwood to inspect the entire forest for certification under the
FSC-certification program. In Fe(SW-COC-234). |

Working together
with our own primary and secondary producers, we called on Value
Missouri
to begin to assemble the chain of custody for
producing FSC-certified consumer products here in
Missouri
. Value
Missouri
represents timber land owners, companies from
Missouri
’s forest products industry, and
members of regional environmental groups. Altogether they represent nearly
185,000 acres of managed timber and 190 direct jobs. Value Missouri’s partners
include: Pioneer Forest--the largest privately-managed forest in Missouri;
Smith Flooring of Mountain View; sawmills Mercantile Lumber of Van Buren and
Harper's in Summersville; and forester Doug Enyart of Piedmont. Over a short
period of time Value
Missouri
has established
the complete chain-of-custody for hardwood flooring which begins with trees
sustainably managed and harvested from
Pioneer
Forest
.
Following the initial rough cut lumber from the sawmill, Smith
Flooring processes that product into consumer-ready flooring and has
established a long-standing reputation for delivering "the natural wood
grain beauty and vivid coloration found only in the slow-growing timber of the
Ozarks." This provides, not only consumers, but also engineers,
architects, and builders here in
Missouri
and nationally, with FSC-certified flooring. For consumers it offers an
opportunity to purchase from environmentally-friendly businesses. For
architects and builders it offers a product which meets the U.S. Green Building
Council's national standard for "green buildings" through their
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Rating System. |
