RESEARCHING ON PIONEER FOREST

These managed forest lands, along with our thousands of acres of protected reserve areas, are ideal for short and long-term research. In keeping with Leo Drey’s own land conservation ethic, Pioneer Forest is interested in encouraging any of various scientific studies on the forest.

The Range of Research Already Undertaken on Pioneer Forest

Over the years numerous research projects have taken place on Pioneer Forest holdings. Below is a partial list of topics recently studied:

  • Archaeology: studies of indigenous petroglyphs and artifacts
  • Botany: plants of fens, glades, and sinkhole ponds
  • Ecology: plant and animal communities of various ecosystems
  • Forestry: hardwood and pine regeneration, dendrology
  • Geology: limestone and sandstone stratigraphy, cave and spring formation
  • History: surveys of water turbine-powered mills
  • Soils and Mineralogy: surveys of the area’s soils, pH and mineral variation based on tree rings
  • Ornithology: forest bird response to silvicultural treatments
  • Parks and Recreation: Trails, rivers, and recreation areas
  • Speleology: cave biotic communities, cave and spring formation
  • Zoology: black bear, bat, and spotted skunk studies

A copy of these studies is available in our Salem office. Also available is a current annotated bibliography of all research done on Pioneer Forest.

What Pioneer Forest Has to Offer

In addition to vast tracts of oak/pine/hickory forest, the holdings of Pioneer Forest include dozens of caves, glades, fens, bluffs, vernal pools, streams, springs, sinkholes, old-growth stands and many other natural features. Pioneer Forest also owns state historic and archeological sites, and thirteen miles of the Ozark Trail. Our staff has many years of experience in the Central Ozarks, including knowledge which can make any map come alive. We have conducted our own regeneration research since 1952. The 160,000 acres which comprise Pioneer Forest are open to you as a potential researcher. We ask only that you send us the completed application on the next page of this web site for our review and approval. Once your project is approved we ask that you keep us updated at least semi-annually while your research is ongoing. We also require that you furnish us with any paper or publication resulting from your work. Call, e-mail or write us with any questions.
